Just because areas like the Design District and Wynwood are incredibly well known for art doesn’t mean that broader Miami doesn’t have it going on. Located in North Miami, the Museum of Contemporary Art is an exciting institution away from some usual suspects.
About the Museum of Contemporary Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art presents contemporary art and its historical influences through exhibitions, educational programs, and collections. Its mission involves helping art lovers discover new artists and learning about the diverse cultural heritage of Miami. It aims to provide a welcoming place to encounter the new ideas and voices that help push the city forward.
History of the MOCA
The museum’s lineage goes back to 1981 with the founding of the Center of Contemporary Art in a single gallery space. Since then, it has matured, eventually taking over the Institute for Contemporary Art’s original location in North Miami.
MOCA’s Collection
When no other museum in Miami-Dade County was collecting contemporary art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) began to do so in 1995.
Since then, it has built a significant collection of sculptures, paintings, and works on paper. It houses over 400 works by local, national, and international contemporary artists, including Pablo Cano, Teresita Fernandez, Keith Haring, Alex Katz, Edward Ruscha, and George Segal.
Education Activities
The MOCA offers educational initiatives that are designed to serve the community. It offers programs such as Contemporary Art Boot Camp lectures, 5 Minutes of Fame artists forums, Arts for All, hands-on art classes for adults, and music concerts.
Visiting the MOCA
For art lovers interested in visiting the MOCA, you can find it at 770 NE 125th Street. It is open Wednesday through Sunday.
True to its mission, tickets are free for MOCA members, children under 12, North Miami residents, city employees, veterans, and Bank of America cardholders on the first weekend of each month through the Museums on Us program.
General admission is $10.00. Students and seniors get in for $3.00.
