Veronese (1528-88) was one of the great masters of the Venetian School and his work embodies the grandeur, color, and light that is so characteristic of Venetian painting. Veronese was born in 1528 in Verona, Italy. His real name was Paolo Caliari, but he later adopted the name of his hometown as his professional moniker. He began his career as an assistant to Antonio Badile, an Italian painter of the Renaissance. In 1551, he moved to Venice where he joined the workshop of Titian. He quickly developed his own style, characterized by rich colors and a light touch.
Veronese achieved great success in his lifetime. Today he is recognized as one of the greatest painters of the Venetian School. His work is celebrated for its beauty, grandeur, and technical mastery.
