Pottery is one of the oldest human inventions, dating back to at least 24,000 BCE. It is also one of the most important and versatile of all human inventions. Pottery was probably first developed as a way to store food and water. It quickly became clear that pottery could be used for much more than just storage, however.
Pottery was used for cooking, transportation, and even as a form of art. Some of the most famous pieces of pottery were created by the Ancient Greeks. The most famous piece of Greek pottery is the “Krater”, a large vase used for mixing wine and water. Other popular pieces included amphorae (large jars used for storage), kylikes (small drinking cups), and hydria (large water jugs).
Greek pottery was often decorated with scenes from mythology or daily life. Potters also experimented with different shapes, sizes, and colors of pottery. Some of the most famous pieces of Greek pottery were found in the ruins of Pompeii, a city that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79 CE.
