Primitive art includes a diversity of styles, themes and time periods which renders it difficult to categorize. It can refer to art made by those considered to be outside the spheres and influence of Western culture or dominant cultural groups. It can also refer to self-taught artists whose works are rudimentary, or art that was deliberately created to appear primitive.
