The Duomo in Florence is one of the most iconic buildings in all of Italy. The cathedral, which is also known as the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, is the largest church in Florence and one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country. The Duomo was begun in 1296 and completed nearly 200 years later in 1436. The exterior of the cathedral is made of white, pink, and green marble in a Gothic style. The massive dome, which dominates the skyline of Florence, was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and completed in 1436. The interior of the Duomo is just as impressive as the exterior, with beautiful stained glass windows and a grandiose altar.
The Duomo is also famous for its paintings and sculptures. Some of the most famous works of art in the cathedral include Michelangelo’s “Pieta” and Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Annunciation.”
